In 2005, an eradication program was run on Viwa Island by The University of the South Pacific and the Pacific Cooperative Islands Initiative. The aim was to protect Fiji’s special ground frog (boto ni Viti), as there was evidence on other islands that rats and cats have reduced populations of native reptiles and amphibians. The project successfully removed introduced predators: cats and dogs from the island, and the island was predator-free for a period of time. The rats however still remain, and cats are back on the island. These two animals still threaten the special Fiji ground frog.
