Conservation Pioneer Alifereti Bogiva passes on Alifereti Bogiva one of Fiji’s most influential conservationists has died after a brief illness.

NatureFiji-MareqetiViti joins with many conservationists worldwide to mourn the passing of Alifereti Bogiva who in the 80’s and 90’s was a beacon for leading grass-roots conservation in Fiji.

Originally from Ra, Alifereti was well known all over Fiji as the Forester who was more interested in conserving trees than cutting them down.

So it was not much of a surprise that he left Forestry and took on a more influential role with Fijian Affairs and here he was able to preach his conservation philosophy to a wider audience.

The last few years Alifereti was instrumental in assisting conservation efforts through a position with the University of the South Pacific.

Most of Fiji’s Protected Areas have had the helping hand or are attributable to Alifereti’s work with the landowners – these include Sovi, Bouma, Waisali, Tavuni Hill Fort, Koroyanitu and many others.

We all salute you Alifereti.
