NatureFiji-MareqetiViti club members of Nadala Village celebrate World Environment Day with Nadarivatu High School.

Last week (June 01st – 5th) marked the Department of Environment’s Environment Week campaign. Environment Day, as is the annual custom, was celebrated on Friday June 5th.

The global theme for this year’s Environment Day is: “Your Planet Needs You – UNite to Combat Climate Change”. To commemorate this day in a more local style, Fiji’s theme was: “Climate Change is Real: Act Now to Save our Island Home”, and this was celebrated in Ba Town because of the devastating impacts of the recent floods to the township.

NatureFiji-MareqetiViti club members of Nadala Village in Ba also celebrated the Department of Environment’s Environment Week Campaign.

The week long celebration began on Tuesday 2nd June for the Nadala youths who performed their drama at the Community-based workshop organised by the Environment Week Committee in Votua Village, Ba. The drama was titled “Logging is one of the causes of climate change” to reflect the local theme.

The youths also conducted some birdwatching activities around Nadala Village and were rewarded with sightings of many of Fiji’s endemic birds.

On June 5th, Environment Day, the NatureFiji-Club members of Nadala Village made a very special contribution to the local school: Nadarivatu High School, by sharing all they had learnt with the students.

After conducting their own research on species that were of interest to them through talking with the NFMV staff and consulting the Endangered Species CD Rom and various other books supplied by NFMV, the youths developed species profiles and presented these to the students.

We thank the Department of Environment and the Environment Week Committee for giving us the opportunity to participate in the Environment Week campaign.

Our gratitude to the Principal (Mrs Gavidi) and teachers of Nadarivatu High School for allowing the NatureFiji-MareqetiViti club members to talk to the children about Environment Day and Fiji’s biodiversity.

We are all looking forward to next year’s campaign!!
