Freshwater Fish Discovery with Lekima

Lekima Copeland

Lekima Copeland describes himself as shy and reserved but is certainly not when it comes to his passion for the study of fish. Lekima is a freshwater ichthyologist at the USP’s Institute of Applied Science (IAS).

Finding out about the impact of mankind on the Earth has pushed me to learn more about nature and made me more passionate about fish ecology and taxonomy.

His interest in science started at a young age. Lekima’s research and study on the mechanisms affecting the abundance, diversity and community structure of fish in wadeable streams have identified that stream flow and water quality are important for freshwater fish biodiversity.

These parameters are affected by development and his research provided a baseline for stream and fish health in Nakorotubu, Ra, prompting the establishment of more watershed management projects in Fiji to address them.
