Learn about Fiji’s endangered palms from Dick Watling, scientist, author and Pacific Islands’ key environmentalist, at the Kila Eco Park. Help conserve two of Fiji’s highly threatened palms, Navua/Phillip’s Palm (Heterospathe phillipsii) and Nabukavesi Palm (Balaka diffusa), which are both listed on the IUCN Red List. The only known and critically small populations of these two palms are found in contiguous forest close to the Kila Eco Park site, and the Park management is working closely with NatureFiji-MareqetiViti to provide an ex-situ conservation opportunity for these palms.

This will be a fun learning session for both adults and children. Potted palm seedlings, holes and sites will be prepared ahead of time. After planting, Dick will lead you on a forest walk in the park. Bring a picnic to enjoy by the stream. The walk is a climb to the ridge of a small hill and down a different route. It is not challenging… as it is offered and enjoyed by many cruise ship visitors. The path is through lowland rainforest which was logged many years ago and is now recovering. The area is part of a well-forested hinterland and so a representative complement of Viti Levu’s forest fauna and flora may be seen.
