Explore the planned Savaurua Botanic Gardens

Join Lex in exploring the beautiful forested area which will soon be developed into the Savaurua Botanic Gardens. Learn about Fiji’s flora and fauna on your bushwalk to the stream and waterfall. Enjoy a swim in the pools/rapids and a picnic with your family.

Savurua has two lovely waterfalls and the area is covered in native forest while another area will be converted into a more formal botanical gardens setting focussed on Fijian plant species. The area adjoins the Viti Levu Southern Highlands Important Bird Area and is rich in Fijian endemic bird species, including the threatened Black-faced Shrikethrush. It includes one of the best remaining stands of the endangered Fiji’s sago palm. The streams on either side of the gardens are pristine with native fish, numerous rapids, deep pools and spectacular waterfalls.

Dr Lex Thomson

Dr Lex Thomson (Forest Scientist)

Dr. Lex Thomson is passionate about the conservation of Fiji’s flora and fauna, especially genetic diversity and genetic resources of important tree species. He works as a natural resource consultant and is Associate Adjunct Professor (Agroforestry) at the University of Sunshine Coast, Australia. Lex worked for five years as an agricultural-forestry trade specialist in the Land Resources Division of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) in capacity as the Team Leader for the EU-funded Facilitating Agricultural Commodity Trade Project. Prior to that he led Bioversity International’s global forestry research program and the AusAID-SPRIG project (South Pacific Forest Genetic Resources Initiative). Over the past two decades, Lex has also worked extensively on forestry, agroforestry, farm forestry and agricultural production systems including development of export markets and impacts of climate change on Pacific Islands agricultural and forestry produce. His professional career has focused on research and development, utilization, management and conservation of forest genetic resources including in more than 35 tropical developing countries in East and West Africa, South, East and S.E. Asia, the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
