NatureFiji-MareqetiViti’s sago palm conservation efforts are published in Environmental Management, an international scientific journal.
MareqetiViti’s conservation efforts for the threatened endemic, the Fiji sago palm (Metroxylon vitiense) was honoured recently acclaimed in an internationally published journal, Environmental Management.
The Springer journal which is an open access online publication, publishes conservation management related articles.
The article was written by Dr. Clare Morrison, a research associate of NFMV, who is currently a research fellow at the International Centre for Ecotourism Research, in Griffith University Australia.

Clare has been collaborating with NFMV on her research which looks at the impacts of tourism on biodiversity and how tourism can be used as a conservation tool in developing regions.
She recently presented to the tourism industry in Fiji on the impacts of tourism developments on Fijian biodiversity.

Dr. Morrison’s co-authors, Isaac Rounds (Conservation International) and our very own, Dr. Dick Watling collaborated on the piece to produce a comprehensive description of current conservation efforts (and stakeholders) and the specific recovery actions detailed in NFMV’s Sago Recovery Plan.
The article details NFMV’s Sago Recovery Plan and demonstrates the apparent lack of support for conservation initiatives focusing on the Fiji sago palm.
The inaction from our tourism sector, which was noted by the main author during her presentation to the Fiji Tourism industry members in Nadi last year, is highlighted.
“The absence of significant behavioral changes by the largest consumer – the tourism industry” is a considerable barrier to the implementation of the most important actions outlined in the recovery plan.
