In the Eyes of Children

NatureFiji-MareqetiViti had the most charming experience of presenting to students from the Gospel Blind School on Thursday 8th of March, 2012.

NatureFiji-MareqetiViti was happy to accept an invitation from Gospel Blind School teacher, Patricia Heffernan, to talk to a group of students ranging from six years to fifteen years old.

Reena Fiu, Anna Sahai and Tamara Osborne took communications materials to the school for the presentation and donated these items to the school library.

Part of these materials donated, were three Mai Veikau books; one was donated by NFMV and the other two by the Vodafone ATH WOD programme (through Anna Sahai’s sponsorship by Vodafone).

Their young minds eagerly absorbed all the information that was imparted to them with the help of the sign-language translators (the teachers of the classes present). The message of conserving our forests to protect Fiji’s biodiversity and to sustain all the forest ecosystem functions was made clear with photographs. The students learnt the names of plants and animals found only in Fiji and were shown photographs of these rare species. Their reactions were so rewarding to the NFMV team, and we all felt privileged to be given the opportunity to share this experience with the hearing-impaired young ‘uns.

During her thank you speech, which she signed to us, a hearing-impaired teacher relayed to NFMV their gratitude for having us present to them and just how much it meant to her personally to see all the beautiful plants and animals found only in Fiji.
