Mago Island, the property of actor-producer Mel Gibson is NatureFiji-MareqetiViti’s second Corporate Gold Sponsor.
Mago Island, one of the largest freehold islands in Fiji was recently acquired by actor-producer Mel Gibson.
In May 2007, NatureFiji-MareqetiViti undertook a Conservation Values study of the island, and as a result of which, the island’s management has become NatureFiji-MareqetiViti’s second Corporate Gold Sponsor.
The island retains some very good forest stands – the majority of which lie over difficult limestone karst rock.
Three Globally Threatened species are found on Mago – the Sheath-tailed Bat, the Samoan Flying Fox and the Friendly Ground-Dove.
The Conservation Values study provides some recommendations to improve the conservation status of the island’s wildlife and the island’s management is now considering these.
A copy of the report is available form the NatureFiji-MareqetiViti secretariat.
