Timoci Kanacagi (aka Jim) was an intern in 2018, assisting with the rat eradication program for Yabu Island in Kadavu.
Before that, Jim worked for the Ministry of Fisheries and Forests (MFF) conducting field surveys on pearl-making oysters; administrative work for the Ministry’s ice sales to fisherman; and training on aquaculture farming, marine protected areas and awareness, as well as licensing and regulations for fishermen. He was also involved in the Ministry’s collaboration with the Fiji Navy and the Fiji Police to monitor legal fishing boundaries.
Jim earned a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Fisheries from the Fiji National University College of Agriculture in 2015. While there, he conducted practical fieldwork for the MFF in Galoa and Naduruloulou. Jim also did fieldwork for the World Wildlife Fund, where he conducted education and awareness programs on Mali Island, and mangrove planting for the Sheraton Hotel on Viti Levu.
Jim will pursue a postgraduate degree in marine science at the University of the South Pacific.
